At Ondeck Charleston we Teach you to Sail Comfortably...
... on any size sailboat. Sailing from our docks on Charleston Harbor, we've guided more than 1,000 adults each year since 1997 to become proficient and comfortable sailors.
"As far as instructors, one can't raise the
bar higher. Yours are professional, knowledgeable beyond expectation,
constructive, positive and truly wonderful people. As the voices of
your firm they cannot be surpassed." - Robert O., Charlotte, NC
Why chose ondeck Charleston? We have excellent instructors, are located in a beautiful and challenging location, provide maximum time on the water per course and offer the most varied sailing school options on the southeast coast. You may choose from single-day sailing experiences to multi-week offshore sailing adventures. You may follow your dreams all the way through coastal navigation to ocean proficiency if you'd like, since you'll have joined one of only three sailing schools in the country that includes Ocean Passage Making as its final course.
We offer many ways for you to comfortably gain sailing skills: weekday and weekend classes, family sailing classes, sailing lessons on your own boat, harbor racing, student-crewed ocean races, Melges 24 racing/performance sailing clinics, team building programs, cruising flotillas, and bareboat and skippered sailboat charters.
"The sailing class was great! I learned more with Cyrus in three days than I
have learned in all of the sailing classes I have taken (ASA and
others). I really don't have any suggestions on changing the course; I
was 110% satisfied!!!" - Randall Lannie, Charleston, SC
As an ondeck student you...
- Benefit from Highly Personalized Instruction Maximum of 4 students per instructor. Our instructors teach using all learning modalities including repetition, muscle memory, questioning and leading to answers. Wherever you are in the learning process, we'll meet you and progress from there.
- Spend Maximum Time on the Water You have more hours on the water here than anyplace else. Our courses introduce you to the concepts and then make sure that you have plenty of time to practice, learn and know each step before moving on to larger boats and bigger water. Our Basic Keelboat, for example, runs for a total of 6 days, vs. the common 3 to 4 days. Over the years we've improved this sailing course until arriving at a content and duration that provides you with the necessary skills for thorough, basic competency.
- Learn with the Newest and Best Equipment Boats range from 26 foot Colgates to fully outfitted ocean going yachts.
- Sail with Exceptional Instructors
"It was nothing less than terrific. Our instructors found the perfect balance between control and oversight. We laughed and learned, were appropriately serious, and all questions were answered kindly and appropriately." - anonymous student survey.
Our instructors are US Sailing Certified, highly experienced sailors.
- Enjoy a Challenging and Beautiful Location Charleston's warm climate and its broad, shallow waters provide a comfortable backdrop to the constant challenge of tides, winds, river currents and offshore conditions, all of which develop students' sail planning and close-quarters maneuvering skills.
"There is nowhere else in the U.S. that you can sail all year round with a dependable sea breeze in a protected harbor. The combination of great breeze and tricky currents makes Charleson Harbor excellent for racing." Reggie Fairchild, Co-chairman, Melges 24 Nationals, Charleston 2008
